Armenia is a republic lying in the Caucasus region of southwest Asia, which was division of the former Soviet Union. It is a non-coastal country surrounded by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Iran to the south, Azerbaijan to the east, and Azerbaijan's Naxcivan exclave to the southwest. Geologically, it is completely in Asia, but ethnically, it is maybe part of Eastern Europe. It contains Sevana Lich (Lake Sevan), the largest lake in the Lesser Caucasus mountain range. Armenian is the national language of nearly everybody in Armenia, which is one of the most monoethnic states in the world. Though, Russian is almost commonly spoken as well, and English is becoming widespread throughout Yerevan.

The main religion in Armenia is Christianity. The roots of the Armenian Church go back to the first century. Intermarriage with Christian Armenians is recurrent. Still, in spite of these difficulties, a lot of interest exists to help the community meet its needs. Armenia is much like any other European country, though still a bit more old-fashioned. Shorts are newly catching on for men, though skirts have been extremely short for years. Locals tend to be accommodating of visitors' differences. When visiting churches, women are likely to dress modestly and cover their heads with a scarf, although this is not sternly compulsory for tourists.

The weather in Armenia is markedly continental. Summers are dry and sunny, lasting from June to mid-September. The temperature fluctuates between 22° and 36 °C/71-97 °F. However, the low humidity level mitigates the effect of high temperatures. Evening breezes blowing down the mountains give a welcome refreshing and cooling effect. Springs are short, while falls are lengthy. Autumns are known for their energetic and colorful plants. Winters are quite cold with plenty of snow, with temperatures ranging between -10° and -5 °C/14-23 °F.
